Stump Server Setup Guide
About
Welcome to Stump Server, a Plex media server providing a vast collection of movies, TV shows, stand-up comedy specials, concert videos and sports for your streaming enjoyment. Access all your favorite content in one convenient location from your TV, phone, computer, and almost any smart device.
Getting Started
- Create your Plex account: You should've received an email to create your account and gain access to Stump Server. Follow the instructions in the email to create your account. If you have any confusion, read this article. If you didn't receive an email invite, reach out to Stump.
-
Sign into your Plex account: You now have a Plex account with access to Stump Server. Download the 'Plex' app on your TV/console/streaming device and sign into this account.
Note: You can also use Plex on your phone or computer. The mobile app requires a $5/mo Plex Pass subscription so you likely won't want to use this right away. On a computer Make sure to download the Plex app and DO NOT use a browser -- it will buffer. - Plex TV/Console App: Search your TV's app library for 'Plex'

VERY IMPORTANT: Before attempting to play any media from Plex, you must set your video quality settings to 'Original/Maximum' for 'Remote Streaming'.
Here's some instructions on how to do that for your specific device: Plex Video Quality Settings Guide
It'll look something like this on the 'Settings' of your TV/streaming device:
Note: You must configure this on each device you're using Plex from. - Watch something: If you've followed all the directions above, start playing some content and ensure your 'Quality' is set to 'Original' like in the last screenshot above.
- Request content: Don't see something in Plex that you want to watch? Fear not, simply click the 'Request Content' button in this page's header to request a Movie or TV Show. You can sign into 'Ombi' with your same Plex login credentials. When shows your request become available, you will get an email notificiation.
You can check that you've done this correctly once you start playing a video and click the 'Settings' in the video player -- it should show 'Original' like so:
Rules
-
Never Transcode.
Make sure to follow the instructions below regarding setting your video quality to 'Original/Maximum'. If you don't do this, you will wind up transcoding. Transcoding means that Plex cannot play my content in its original quality (i.e. 1080p) due to factors including: the device you're using to play it, your internet download speeds, and your Plex settings. Transcoding causes my server to creatae a copy of the content in the resolution/format your streaming device has requested (i.e. 720p), which bogs down the server and will cause playback issues for yourself, me, and my other users. -
Do not sign into Plex on devices that are not your own.
If you do this, I won't know who is using which device to ensure everything is working properly and will likely eventually revoke your access from the server due to stability concerns. -
Enjoy.
This has become a fun side project for me. I hope you enjoy it. Feel free to reach out with questions about how to best use Plex.
